Cranford, NJ (ACSA Advances Magazine) May 1, 2006 --
Fed up with the price of gasoline heading up over $3.00 a gallon towards the $5.00
mark,
not likely to drop anytime soon, industry
leading computer maker CompAmerica (http://www.compamerica.com),
has added a new product line it does not expect other PC
manufacturers to copy: the xBike™.
The Suburban
Cruiser™
Plug it in, Charge it up on ordinary House Current,
Drive away! Save thousands on Gas, Insurance and
repairs!
CompAmerica
is moving in on the lucrative Personal
Transportation (PT) marketplace. CompAmerica indicated it is now
offering ten new digitally managed, electronically powered vehicles, called: xBikes™.
"Why waste money on Gasoline at $3.00 a gallon or higher for
those short trips to the train station or the convenience store,
or to pick up at Quiznos?" stated company CEO Dr. Jack A.
Shulman.
"These xBike's simply plug in to your everyday wall outlet.
Charge them up in 6 or 7 hours, then drive up to 80 Kilometers
(50 miles). If you only use them 10,000 miles a year, or
200 full charges, you'll spend about $50 for the
electricity. If you also own an SUV gas guzzler, and get
15 MPG around town like most stop and go drivers, youd save up
to 667 gallons of gasoline, worth about $2000 today!
Tomorrow?" he added. "Further: you'd be reducing America's
dependency on foreign oil. Imagine if 100 million
Americans did that: we'd save over 60 Billion Gallons of
Gasoline each year! That would represent a reduction
in consumption of well over a Billion Barrels of oil!"
The company indicated that xBikes™ do not run on gasoline,
they are electric. They are equipped with built in electronic
controls that
charge by plugging the xBike into any home or office power outlet using a
standard three prong safety plug and AC line cord. They
can be conveniently charge over night or during a work day, and then can be used
"for all kinds of errands or commuting", safely and
with very little training. The larger "no-pedals" versions
are designed to protect a rider at speeds up to 48 miles per
hour (where States allow), while the "pedal plus assist"
versions have extended range, and operate like an ordinary
bicycle, with the motor smoothing the hills out and increasing
distance and speed. Emergency power packs are also available and
can be stowed safely in a compartment on the xBike.
While they usually aren't used that much at night, xBikes™ have
full lighting, and may also be run in rainy or other
inclement weather, without fear of damage. Many states require
bikers to wear a safety helmet, available for order with the xBike™. CompAmerica also indicated that any landlords
interested in equipping parking areas so their tenants'
employees, and employers, can charge up their xBikes™ while at
work, can contact CompAmerica at 888-275-2771 for a consultation
on how to do so easily and without excessive cost.
Popular in the
far east, Personal Electronic Bikes are just entering the US
Market, said the company. CompAmerica indicated it is
soliciting dealers at bike shops and motorcycle companies.
It expects them to become very
popular, they might eventually outnumber automobiles on
metropolitan streets. An "Extended Carry All shopping rack"
will be available for serious shoppers, to allow them to carry
20-40+ pounds of gifts and groceries. The ECA can either attach
permanently on the rear, or can run from a small hitch, with a
third wheel. A "dual power" version is anticipated in
2007, that will extend the range and carry capacity even
further.
"Today, we build them in Asia, for
now. Tomorrow, we hope to build them in the USA as the
popularity ramps up." said a company spokesperson. The
company's most advanced model, the Cruiser, is depicted to left.
A
spokesperson indicated CompAmerica is aiming "xBikes™ at
auxiliary transportation uses: for shorter trips around town, to the
mall or to a nearby job". CompAmerica believes the average
suburban or urban driver will buy and use an xBike™ to save on fuel
and on wear and tear on their car. The company indicated it also
believes the xBike™ could bring about major environmental
improvement, by offsetting as much as 75% of all short hop travel.
"The reduction of automobile use in short hops, would drastically
reduce heat contributing to global warming, and could all but
eliminate smog from urban areas." suggested one spokesperson.
"Electricity to charge the xBike™ batteries still has to come from
somewhere, but at thousands of times less impact than petroleum
gasoline powered cars."
"Why a Computer Company?" asked one prospective buyer. For
many years, now, CompAmerica has made computer controllers for
the transportation industry, so-called industrial kioskpcs (http://www.kioskpcs.com).
Over time, it and its industrial partners have built more and
more parts, until one such partnership produced the first fully
electronically controlled, power efficient electronic bicycle
(the forerunner of the cricket below). So, with the advent
of high gasoline prices this year, it just seemed a natural for
CompAmerica to begin master distribution of these remarkable,
fuel saving xBikes™... Here is the product line.

An xBike™
charge for 20-30 miles, costs only about $.12 or less. Today,
that amount of gasoline would cost between $3 and $9 depending upon
automobile. xBikes can also be charged by house power derived from
solar or wind sources, said the spokesperson. In addition to costing
less to power, the new bikes are easy to repair. Spare
wheels can be popped in and out of them in under 10 minutes, and
the durable motor has an estimated 10 year lifespan.
Batteries are easily swapped, and brakes need replacement beyond
the expected lifespan of the bike itself.
The new
xBike is powered by easily replaceable, rechargeable batteries
that can plug into any house outlet: hence the name "xBike™".
xBike's ordinarily seat one rider. They recharge overnight or while
at work. xBikes™ have a maximum velocity/ranges of from 20 to
30 miles depending upon model, between charges. xBike™ Batteries
have an average expected lifespan of 1-2 years before replacement and are
relatively inexpensive. xBike's™ have a maximum speed of from
20 to 48 miles per hour. CompAmerica indicates it sets maximum
speed to comply with local and federal law. xBikes™ are rugged
and long lasting, costing only a few cents to charge, versus the
$3-10 worth of gasoline (and rising) each charge usage saves.
With a sticker price as low as $499, the stylish xBikes™ pay for
themselves many times over in fuel cost savings. An optional annual
maintenance program is also available, to insure long life for an
xBike.
A New
Vehicle Category
The electric (or electric-assisted) bike (or "xBike™")
is an emerging new category of vehicle. Its
design is based on the principle of augmenting,
in the case of "electric assist", and/or
replacing human power in the case of "power
drive". The bikes we carry are of advanced
design but proven and fully consumer-ready. New
models have been specifically developed for the
North American market. The potential market is
amazingly broad, uses quite varied designs, and
owner satisfaction has been exceptionally high,
higher than for their primary 4 wheel vehicles.
CompAmerica's xBike™ is available in "power
drive" (eMo Scooter) and "electric assist" (eMo
Ped) formats.
Typical eMoScooter xBike
"no pedals"
POWER DRIVE
Powered completely by electricity,
this version has a typical 20-40
mile range and varies from 18 to 48
miles per hour.
Typical eMo Ped xBike
"see: pedals"
ELECTRIC ASSIST
Powered by pedaling and assisted by
electric motor, this version has a
typical 20-25 mile range plus pedal
distance, and varies from 5 - 25
miles per hour.
The eMo Scooter xBike is visibly different in
that it looks more like the Vespa Motor Scooter
or a small motorcycle. Because it is fully
Electric Powered, it is street legal in most
states, but in some may require registration at
either the state or local level (depending upon
where the law goes in the future, so check with
your local police's public information line and
ask about 'fully electric powered' electronic
bikes). The eMo Ped xBike is similar
looking to any original Moped, but is also
Electric Powered, except for the fact that it is
electric "assisted", you can pedal it, it is
somewhat lighter weight, and has extended range.
The electric bike's ability to level out hills,
cruise quietly with a minimum of fuss and
perspiration, while providing an appropriate
level of exercise in either case, is convincing
many that there exists a more attractive choice
than the pedal-only bicycle, bus or car for
errands, commuting or sheer rider enjoyment. The
electric bike is designed to be near-maintenance
free. It costs no more than a quality pedal-only
bicycle. The law regards it as a non-motor
vehicle, and, in essence, as a bicycle. Read
what
Washington State law stipulates. Federal law
in the U.S. (PL 107-319) and Canada, as well as
some state laws and local ordinances are
similar. Read what
California State Law stipulates. Note
that the electronic motor scooter (eMo Scooter)
may be subject to registration and insurance in
certain states because of its higher speed
potential, even though it is inherently more
stable than an eMoPed.
CompAmerica indicated that for a limited period of time, xBikes™ will come with a coupon rebating one year's insurance
coverage in any states ultimately requiring such insurance and registration.
It indicated that xBikes™ can be driven in most states on roadways,
parking lots, some public parks, and where-ever else permitted, as
well as in Canada, Mexico, Central, South America, and the
Caribbean Island nations.
Fixed rate leasing is available with auto-renewal and replacement by
a next year's model on an annual or semi-annual basis.
CompAmerica also indicated it was intent upon offering a "fully
enclosed model" for use in "intemperate climates", as
well as "a two-seater, eventually".
CompAmerica
indicated that xBike's™ are fully "DoE Energy Star Complying", "Green
Products", meaning that they do not pollute, have no emissions
(unlike gasoline driven vehicles), are easily repaired, and can lead
to "thousands and thousands of dollars in savings over driving the
family car for short trips, where mileage is the worst!". Use
also reduces mileage, wear and tear on the owner's primary motor
vehicle, said the company.
xBike™ spare
parts, tires, replacement batteries and xBike™/PT paraphernalia will be
able to be purchased in addition. For more information, please contact CompAmerica's xBike sales personnel. Dealer inquiries welcome.
